Georgia Reeve has the lowdown on how to buy art without breaking the bank
With this month’s Singapore Biennale and next month’s ARTSingapore on the calendar, art in Singapore has never been so accessible. But if you’re still intimidated about losing your art virginity – and worried about spending a month’s rent at the nearest gallery – go into the process armed with (some) knowledge (see Do’s and Don’ts above). Then start by looking for a piece within your budget:
Less than $100
It is possible to find pieces for $100 or less. Begin by scouring eBay (okay, it’s not the obvious place to start, but you’d be surprised how many bargains are posted by people moving, or by local artists without a regular outlet). Next stop is IKEA. It can be hellish to navigate, so brace yourself and make a beeline for the pictures, poster sets and framed prints; you’ll be impressed by the funky pieces that start as low as $4.90. Also worth a look is the Sungei Road Thieves’ Market (daily 11am- 7pm; MRT: Bugis) – a flea market that’s bustling on weekends – where you never know what gem you might uncover while haggling.
Less than $500
Mark the first weekend of each month in your calendar and take a trip to MAAD market, where up-and-coming artists hawk their wares. Pick up original works for a steal – illustrations and drawings sell for up to $200 – or commission your own paintings (oil or acrylic) starting from $350.
